Collaboration and New Ideas

On 17 June, Innovators, entrepreneurs, business leaders, and technology enthusiasts came together for a successful Biztech Innovation Challenge workshop. It was a highly engaging session focused on tackling real-world business challenges through creativity, collaboration, and emerging technologies.

The workshop provided a dynamic environment for participants to explore innovative thinking, share experiences, and develop practical solutions to current business opportunities and challenges.

The event brought together an outstanding panel of speakers and facilitators, including Professor Ben Allen, Benn Klewpatinond, and Henry Kafeman, Dr Chloe Sharp and workshop facilitator Fredi Nonyelu, each providing unique perspectives on innovation, design thinking, collaboration and emerging technologies. Together, they helped participants explore how innovative thinking can be transformed into practical solutions with real-world impact.

A particular highlight of the event was the contribution of Professor Ben Allen. His insights and expertise helped stimulate discussion around innovation, collaboration and the practical application of emerging technologies in business.

“It was clear that AI is now key to accelerating innovation and innovative thinking” he said.

Reflecting on the success of the event, Fredi Nonyelu, Chair of Biztech, said:

“The Innovation Challenge Workshop demonstrated exactly what makes our community so valuable. When people from different sectors, backgrounds and disciplines come together with a shared desire to solve problems, the quality of ideas and level of collaboration is remarkable. Innovation isn’t just about technology – it’s about people, curiosity and a willingness to challenge conventional thinking. We are delighted to see the Biztech community continuing to grow and create new opportunities for businesses across the region.”

Key Highlights and Learning Points

The workshop demonstrated the power of bringing together diverse perspectives to drive innovation. Throughout the session, participants worked collaboratively to identify challenges, generate ideas and refine potential solutions using structured innovation techniques.

Some of the key learning points included:

  • Customer-centric innovation remains critical – the most effective solutions begin with a deep understanding of customer needs and pain points.
  • Collaboration accelerates creativity – bringing together individuals from different sectors and backgrounds generated fresh perspectives and stronger outcomes.
  • Technology is an enabler, not the objective – successful innovation focuses on solving real business problems, with technology acting as a tool to create value.
  • Rapid ideation and testing reduce risk – developing and validating ideas early helps organisations learn quickly and focus resources on the most promising opportunities.
  • Innovation thrives in supportive ecosystems – access to peers, mentors and collaborative spaces can significantly improve the quality and impact of new ideas.

The workshop also reinforced the importance of developing an innovation mindset. Encouraging participants to challenge assumptions, experiment responsibly and remain open to continuous learning.

A Growing Innovation Community

One of the most valuable outcomes of the event was the continued strengthening of the local innovation community. Participants had the opportunity to build new connections, exchange expertise and explore potential collaborations that extend well beyond the workshop itself.

The enthusiasm, energy and willingness to share insights throughout the day highlighted the strength of the region’s growing network of innovators and business leaders.

Looking Ahead to October

Building on the momentum and positive feedback from June’s event, plans are already underway for the next Biztech Innovation Challenge Workshop in October.

The October session will provide another opportunity to:

  • Explore emerging business and technology trends.
  • Collaborate on new innovation challenges.
  • Learn practical frameworks for turning ideas into action.
  • Connect with professionals who are passionate about driving change and growth.

We look forward to welcoming both returning participants and new faces as we continue to develop an engaged and supportive innovation community.

Why Your Team Is Pushing Back on AI —

Why Your Team Is Pushing Back on AI —

AI resistance isn’t a technology problem — it’s a human response to uncertainty. Teams push back when change feels imposed, not shared, and when the rules of work suddenly shift. The fear isn’t just job loss; it’s loss of control, relevance, and clarity about how performance will be judged. When AI tools add complexity or fail to deliver clear value, trust erodes quickly. What looks like resistance is often rational: unclear goals, weak communication, and low confidence. The real signal? Your team isn’t rejecting AI — they’re telling you where trust, clarity, and alignment are missing.

Foundations of Research and Development for SMEs

Foundations of Research and Development for SMEs

Henry Kafeman emphasises that successful R&D in SMEs begins not with building technology, but with careful preparation. Before committing resources, businesses must validate market need, assess competitors, and ensure their idea is commercially viable in terms of pricing and cost. He highlights the importance of early consideration of intellectual property, regulatory requirements, and the skills and funding needed to progress. R&D should also be viewed within a wider business context, including marketing, operations, and sustainability. Ultimately, Kafeman argues that disciplined, ongoing planning across the full product lifecycle is essential to minimise risk and turn ideas into viable, market-ready solutions.
