3D Printing – the next industrial revolution or just a flash in the pan?

19 September 2013 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm BST

There’s a lot of hype currently surrounding the revolution that seemingly is 3D printing…but can the technology actually live up to it? The next Biztech event on 19 September aims to explain the way the technology not only works but how businesses can utilise it to cut costs and expand in a competitive global marketplace.

The technology can be used to manufacture virtually anything from toothbrushes to shoes; food to clothing; and most controversially guns. But it could even be used to create human organs and living tissue for medical implants.

The media and the experts believe that the technology could transform world trade as we know it. Production costs would be almost identical wherever the products were ‘printed’ so shipping costs disappear and production could be truly local rather than be moved to so called ‘cheaper economies’.

This event is being held at the MK College Innovation and Technology Centre, one of only a few places in Milton Keynes where they actually have an in-house 3D printer, you’ll be able to see the technology in action and hear from key industry speakers on this emotive subject:
Michelle Greeff, 3D Business Manager from Hobs Reprographics who have just launched a new unique 3D technology and provide 3D Printing and 3D Laser Scanning services.
Dr. Christopher Tuck; Deputy Director for Additive Manufacturing at the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Centre Of Innovative Manufacturing; he is also Associate Professor in the University of Nottingham’s Faculty of Engineering, widely regarded as the world’s leading Centre for Additive & 3D Manufacturing research, development and dissemination. He will talk on where research in the field is going, the role of emerging standards and the role of the EPSRC.
Professor Stewart Williams; Welding Science and Technology, School Of Applied Sciences at Cranfield University. He will talk on current Industrial applications of the technology and the future possibilities.

All three speakers will take part in a question and answer session to allow attendees to discover how the technology could work for them and how it will expand over the coming years fuelled by Open Source software, collaborative cultures and the exponential rise in computer and software power.
